CHARLES HINMAN
gems, 2011
Published by Gary Lichtenstein Editions
Screenprints on Paper
30" x 22"
Portfolio Size: 10
The studios of Charles Hinman and Gary Lichtenstein are pleased to announce a new silkscreen collaboration which will feature recently created, three-dimensional paintings by Hinman.
The unveiling of the silkscreen edition will take place at The Butler Institute of American Art in the Fall of 2011.
Charles Hinman is known for his exploration of the three-dimensional canvas, specifically the ways in which he creates a visual dialogue between the illusory space of the painting and the actual space on which the sculptured object rests. Hinman embraces contrast on multiple levels, through his use of color, texture, light and shadow. He is no stranger to the world of silkscreen printing and this newest collaboration will introduce the first of the three-dimensional print editions.
Gary Lichtenstein is known for his spectacular use of color within prints that simultaneously exhibit mastery of the properties of light absorption and reflection. Lichtenstein has collaborated with over ninety artists during the course of his thirty-five year career but considers the Hinman edition both unique and historic – in form, size and scale.
gems is a silkscreen portfolio containing 10 original screen prints. The edition consists of 10 unique portfolios. For more information, please contact us at info@garylichtensteineditions.com

Robert Lazzarini
guard dog sign, 2010
Edition produced for The Alrich Contemporary Art Museum
Two-color screenprint on epoxy-painted laser-cut aluminum
16 1/2 x 14 x 1/16 inches
Edition of 24
Lazzarini's interest in distortion is closely linked to his development of a unique creative process, to his study of historical art, and to his search for an expressive device that can suggest his fascination with what lies beyond representation.
In guard dog sign, the artist utilizes the iconic image of a guard dog, represented on an aluminum sign. The mathematical distortions are computer-generated, involving algorithms, with the intention of confronting and informing the viewer's perception.

Roz Chast
No Early Birds, 2010
Edition produced for The Alrich Contemporary Art Museum
Silkscreen print on 290 gram Coventry paper
Paper 26 x 22 inches
Image 22 x 18 inches
Unframed
No Early Birds is a colorful, humorous rendering of the ubiquitous tag sale poster. Chast, who has been a cartoonist for The New Yorker since 1978, specializes in finding the “inner voice” of inanimate, everyday objects such as those relegated to a tag sale, or as her mother once referred to it, the “conspiracy of the inanimate.”
The artist's fascination with the tiny, seemingly insignificant details that are usually and all too easily ignored is apparent in this hilarious depiction. The print, informing us of a fictional tag sale, with no date and an invented address, summarizes Chast's personal insight into the culture of the tag sale.

Gerard Hemsworth
Brief Encounter (Red), 2009
Published by Gary Lichtenstein Editions
Silkscreen print on 290 gram Coventry smooth paper
Paper 18 3/4 x 18 3/8 inches
Image 9 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches
Edition of 20
The work of British artist Gerard Hemsworth touches on the heightened psychological drama inherent in all fairy tales, yet it is also plainly decorative. His imagery is drawn from the fanciful realm of childhood—picture books, comics, and toys—yet his means of depiction cuts back to the heart of the Modernist painterly concern with flatness and the idea of the picture as an object.
We search the images for narrative clues, yet the way Hemsworth paints reminds us that in fact there are no figures here: this is just an assemblage of forms. What appear to be figures can also be viewed as accumulations of elemental shapes: ovals, straight lines, and, mostly, semicircles.
His images are both insistent and subversive, questioning the values and assumptions that the viewer brings to the work.
Gerard Hemsworth has exhibited internationally since the 1970s. He lives and works in London, where he is the Professor of Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Gary Panter
Daydream trap, 2008
Edition produced for The Alrich Contemporary Art Museum
Four-color silkscreen print on 290 Coventry Rag
Paper size: 29 x 23 inches;
image size: 22 x 17 inches
The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is thrilled to announce Gary Panter's silkscreen print Daydream Trap as the newest Aldrich Edition. This premiere coincides with two others for Panter: the publication of a comprehensive monograph of his work, and his first solo museum exhibition, which opened on March 9 at The Aldrich.
Exhibition curator Richard Klein, The Aldrich's exhibitions director, says of Panter, "His memory is like an encyclopedic inventory of all visual experiences compiled since the midpoint of the last century. This inventory ranges from high art to advertisements to the history of comics and cartoons, and is the source of inspiration for Panter's style, in which an amalgam of characters is presented in the manner of stream-of-consciousness, concrete visual poetry."
Panter's work, which is difficult to easily categorize, has appeared in (among other places) Art Spiegelman's groundbreaking graphic magazine RAW, television's Pee Wee's Playhouse (three Emmy awards for set design), and numerous major book projects. In 2000 he was the recipient of the Chrysler Design Award, an annual award that acknowledges individuals from the world of design who have significantly influenced American culture. In 2005, Panter's work was included in the traveling exhibition Masters of American Comics, organized by UCLA Hammer Museum and LA MoCA.
